itunes 7.2 freezes when i plug in my brand new ipod.

itunes 7.2 freezes after about 30 seconds when i plug in my brand new ipod, though it doesnt when i plug in my old 2nd generation one. there are no songs on my new ipod yet although it turns on fine and seems to work. when it freezes all i ever see is the webpage or whatever i am also viewing in the shape of the itunes window. It then says itunes not responding in the task manager. I have tried reinstalling it but this hasnt helped. any ideas?
