All you can do it to rely on streaming more than keeping files on the phone and keep an eye on the Other category in storage.
Note also that a movie/video can easily be 2-4 GB,
If you have graphics-heavy games, those also can easily reach GBs in size.
If you use iCloud Photo Library turned on, set it to keep only an Optimized library on the phone.
Clear History and Web Data in Safari settings.
Go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > select Manage Storage under Storage (not iCloud). The list that will be displayed is arranged by size of which apps use the most storage. Review it for guidance as to what can be deleted and have a miningful impact on storage.

8 GB isn't much for anything beyond phone calls and web browsing. A single video can be more than the capacity of the phone. Note that an 8 GB iPhone has only about 5 GB for your use.
