Need help upgrading from 10.7.5 to El Capitan

I've downloaded both El Capitan.dmg and Osxupdcombo 10.11.4.dmg to my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 model. When trying to install, each gives me the message that OS X 10.11 is needed before install can complete. I've searched for this version without success. What should I do?

Thanks for your advice.

Upgrading to El Capitan

You can upgrade to El Capitan from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. El Capitan can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.

To upgrade to El Capitan you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download El Capitan from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. El Capitan is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X El Capitan

1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later

2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later

3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later

5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

Are my applications compatible?

There isn't an El Capitan.dmg. You could not have possibly downloaded that from the App Store.

You can download and Install OS X El Capitan app from the Mac App Store. There is no need for the Combo Update unless you downloaded that installer many months ago.

The Apple Downloads site is not the App Store. Use the Apple Menu, App Store… command.

You and Pinkstones are getting me pointed in the right direction, I think. What seems to be happening is that I need the original version of El Capitan and what's available on the App Store is 10.11.4. Perhaps the best solution is to go to the Genius Bar and have them install it.

The only version available is the most current version.

Is there a reason you need 10.11.0?

If you're running Lion, when you go to the App Store to download El Capitan, it shouldn't be giving you 10.11.4 because you're not already using El Capitan. Can you take a screenshot of what you're clicking on in the App Store?

Yes, it will. The most current version is the only one available. No matter what you start with, that will be installed.

I wasn't aware of that. I thought if you didn't already have that OS installed, it wouldn't give you the update, it would give you the installer for the actual OS so you can upgrade. I mean, how else can people upgrade their systems if all that's available is the update, and you can't install the update if you're not already running it?
