Applecare Protection provides 3 years of Manufacturers warranty, and 3 years of Phone Support for the device. It does not cover accidental damage (like the iPhone AppleCare + plan does).

You should take your device in for evaluation at an apple retail store. They can possibly provide an estimate on repair costs.

The other benefit is the extended Apple Care stays with the serial number of the the computer.

So if you upgrade in 2 years, you get a better resale price on the old Mac when you sell it because it will still have 1 year of Apple warranty left. A huge incentive for the next person because they can buy with confidence.
