Macbook Pro audio wont play trough headphones but detects it

If you are not hearing sound from your headphone jack on your computer, I have a few things you can try. First, unplug your headphones and restart your computer. This might reset everything. This does not seem to be the case (especially since you say you can change the volume), but the sound output port on your mac is dual-purpose: it can provide the common analog sound used with typical headphones, and also output digital "optical" audio. Sometimes it can get stuck in the wrong mode, "thinking" it has an optical cable attached when it is not.

On these occasions, in addition to restart, something that can get it "unstuck" is, believe it or not, repeatedly plugging and unplugging the audio cable...
