Macbook Pro audio wont play trough headphones but detects it

Hey all. I have searched around the web for this and couldnt find anything like my problem.
I plugged a headphone in and tried to listen to some music, but no sound was coming trough my headphones. I've checked system preferences and there it was, my device listed and I could unmute, mute, raise volume, etc. But still, no sound. I tried with different headphones and different audio softwares (youtube on chrome, spotify, apple music, etc). No luck.


I also tried killing the coreaudiod but nothing happened. My device is listed, but no sound tho.


Any ideas?

Hi gfviegas,

If you are not hearing sound from your headphone jack on your computer, I have a few things you can try. First, unplug your headphones and restart your computer. This might reset everything. Try a different headset to isolate the issue to the headset or the computer. Take a look at the article below and confirm the sound output settings.

If the issue persists, you may need to take your MacBook Pro and headphones to a local Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider so that they can physically inspect your computer for you.

This does not seem to be the case (especially since you say you can change the volume), but the sound output port on your mac is dual-purpose: it can provide the common analog sound used with typical headphones, and also output digital "optical" audio. Sometimes it can get stuck in the wrong mode, "thinking" it has an optical cable attached when it is not.


On these occasions, in addition to restart, something that can get it "unstuck" is, believe it or not, repeatedly plugging and unplugging the audio cable...
