Q: iPad 4 battery shows as charging but not connected to power source

I have an iPad 4 that currently shows as charging, but it's not connected to a power source.  Earlier in the week, I discarded my old charger because it was breaking at the point I connect it to the iPad.  At times, I'd have to jiggle the cord to get it to charge my iPad.  I replaced the charger, but when I plugged in the new charger, it would not charge.  The only way I could make it charge was to do a hard reset on my iPad with the charger plugged in when I did the reset.  When my iPad came back on, it would be charging.  Now, I've unplugged my charger from the power source, but I left the lightning connector still plugged in to my iPad.  It shows its charging.  Is this a battery problem?  It is holding a charge.  Or is this some other type of problem?  It has the most current updates.  Thank you.
