Carplay connection problems with Chevrolet & iPhone 6s

I've recently acquired 2016 Chevy Corvette that features Carplay connectivity. Unfortunately every time I try co connect, the infosystem on the car becomes unresponsive and crashes, and basically has to reset itself. The Chevy service told me to use genuine Apple phone connector. I tried it, but that didn't seem to work. I don't know if others had experienced similar problems. It seems like a glitch in Chevy software, but I wonder if it could be related to my phone. Carplay was a big selling point for me and it is very annoying that this happens. The best I can do is listen to music via Bluetooth.

Anyone has any additional information about this?

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.3.1

This is what I just did in my 2017 Malibu. Hit the home button, go to settings, turn off apple CarPlay and unplug your phone. Turn the car all the way off (I had to open my door). Turn the car back on, go back to settings turn CarPlay back on. I then turned the car back off, and before I started the car I plugged my phone back in, and CarPlay popped right back up. Hope this helps.

I wasn't able to debug the problem via the CarPlay logs but I did solve my issue.

So it turns out the whole the problem was with my iPhone's lightning port. I got the iPhone X and noticed that the fit of the lightning cable into the port is much more snug, and now CarPlay works perfectly.

If your CarPlay randomly disconnects or won't connect, make sure the lightning cable is seating properly in the port on the phone. You may need to replace the port.

I never really noticed any port issues with my previous iPhones. I suspect that my 7's lightning port was defective in some way (loose, or maybe just dirty?). But I was blaming the car, not the phone, and only realized the real issue once I started using the new phone (partly because my wife was experiencing the same issues with her phone, an SE, and her car).

I don't think I've ever noticed much of a difference in the fit of a lightening cable on the 10 or so phones I've had since the iPhone 4. I don't have an X but wondering how it would be different?? mine always have fit snugly and stayed connected. Maybe it was your last cable? I've had several phones since I've had this car with no luck. Was told it's bc apple updates then chevy has to then apple does again but didn't find that to correspond to updates of my phone when it did work.

I also have a 2017 Elantra, and have frequent disconnects while playing downloaded music and podcasts (every day or so, occasionally several times in a day).

  • The sound just stops (no pop or other funny noises).
  • The screen reverts from "Now Playing" to the home screen.
  • If I press the CarPlay Home Screen panel w here the music source is displayed (which would normally go to "Now Playing"), I get the folder view of the formerly playing app (Music or Podcasts).
  • Sometimes, this view will go through a sort of boot cycle, hunting through folders until it reaches the one that was playing, offering a "Resume: whatever" item.
  • If I resume, it appears the audio has been playing right along: around 1 minute of audio is gone, which is about how long it takes to reset to this state.

Because the source has apparently kept playing normally (consumed media in real time), I'm inclined to suspect that the interruption was due to something amounting to a reboot of the car-side component.

What's most curious about that is that there are similar reports, going back several years, for many auto makes. This, in turn, suggests there's some widely used component (hardware or software) used by some or all manufacturers, and the problem really lies in this OEM component.

You cannot rule out Apple's software as the root cause of all this. I have yet to trial the problems using the Android interface, because all I have is Apple hardware to play with.

Once I completely turned off Apple Car Play in the Intellilink system, I have not had any problems with anything. I can still use wired interface, but it doesn't instantiate the Car Play software and just uses cable to transfer music to the system. The way Apple's software has been trending under Tim Cook, I will bet there are major problems with the underlying Car Play SDK that car manufactures are forced to use when designing their Car Play interface for vehicles. Apple's software is atrocious, and it's only getting worse.

Would seem that auto manufacturers are paying Apple for this feature, or vice versa.. Chevy is advertising it as a feature in tv commercials.. yet, neither company seems to be trying to solve this problem? My 2016 Chevy Cruz is at the dealership now and I asked them to look into this function.. among other car performance issues.. we'll see what they say.

Whether the root cause is Apple's fault, the car manufacturer's fault, or some third party, we as consumers have a beef with all or any of these vendors. But, it's the car company with the biggest financial risk, incentive to fix. I, too, bought this car rather than the many rough equivalents substantially for CarPlay. Tell you're dealer you're unhappy, and active in social media. At the very least, you might give them a bit more leverage to wave at the true offender.

Most car manufacturers are ditching Apple, and Android, and going with the new Open Source options that are much better for everyone.

From Apples latest list of blunders, I would think they could care less if there is a glitch in the SDK they provide auto makers as the blueprint for interfacing with Car Play. Just look at the long list of bugs that sit in iTunes for years. Currently 12.5.4 does not shuffle anymore. Do Apple fix these bugs in timely manner, NEVER. Do I trust Apple updates and releases anymore, not at all.
