Q: Very Slow Macbook Pro 13-inch Mid 2012
Hi everyone! I am not tech-savvy at all, so my apologies if something is not clear in my message below.
Specs:
Macbook Pro 13-inch (Mid 2012)
OS X Yosemite: Version 10.10.5
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Storage: 139.3/499.25 GB in use; 359.95 GB free
For the last two weeks my Macbook Pro 13-inch (Mid 2012) has been extremely slow. The colourful beachball (aka pinwheel of death) often shows up, even when I'm just trying to type something, such as right now (I'm having to type really slowly so it can keep up). This slowness came on very suddenly.
I've tried SMC/NVRAM resets, repairing disk permissions, and restarting in safe mode, but the problem persists (I also tried to upgrade to El Capitan, but was greeted with a delightful restart loop, and recovered my time machine backup again from recovery mode). I think I may have also tried to reindex spotlight but I may or may not have been successful.
I haven't been able to create a successful Time Machine backup since last month because it gets stuck on "Preparing Backup..." (not sure if this could be related). I also wanted to mention that Dropbox is one of my startup items, but I have had it for ages and it has never made my Macbook this ridiculously slow. Prior to this slowness, I would quit it and my Macbook would be back up to speed. I have also tried taking it off the startup items list and the slowness persisted even after restarting.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I've seen a lot of people post "EtreCheck" reports, so here's mine (sorry if I included any irrelevant information - I have no idea what any of this means):

There is a hardware fault in the storage subsystem, such as a partial break in the ribbon cable connecting the internal drive to the logic board.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
