A couple of weeks ago, I synced my iPod and got ready to go on a trip. My podcasts suddenly sounded like a chipmunks recording -- very fast-- like I was playing an old-fashioned record at the wrong speed, or was listening to a video while fast-forwarding it. I checked upgrades, and seem to have the most recent version of iTunes. Prior to this, have never had this problem. Help!

THANK YOU! That did it. Have never even noticed this setting before. I have no idea why someone would want to change up the speed.
Some people want to increase the speed for audiobooks.
Listening to spoken podcasts (i.e., no music, etc), is surprising easy and saves time. Try it at the 1.5X speed. After the first 10 minutes, you'll barely notice it.
