ipod nano detected but not recognised, why??

My wife has an ipod Nano 7G. We have Windows 10, and iTunes 12.3.3.17. This has been working fine for months. But today she plugged her ipod in, and it wiped all the music on the ipod, suffice to say she isn't happy. She then unplugged it, plugged it in, and now she gets 'ipod detected, but is not recognised'.

I have uninstalled / reinstalled iTunes. I followed the process to update the driver. But still it doesn't work. What else can I do to make it work again. As it stands the ipod (only a few months old) is essentially useless.

If you already tried uninstalling iTunes, you probably did not completely remove iTunes and related software components. This Apple document lists the components of the iTunes installation, and the precise order to uninstall them

Then, reinstall the latest version if iTunes
