Upgraded to OS El Capitan, now my printer won't work

As above, Upgraded to OS El Capitan and now my MP500 printer won't work,. I get an error message about the filter (?). I tried the scanner, it scans, but there is no way to save what I have scanned. I suspect it needs a newer or different driver, but I can't remember how to go about that.
