Given your description of the issue, if your iPhone appears to still be active even with the screen black, you may want to see if the Screen Curtain function may have been accidentally turned on (an Accessibility feature that darkens the screen for people with vision impairments). You may find the following section of the User Guide helpful:

Turn the screen curtain on or off. Triple-tap with three fingers. When the screen curtain is on, the screen contents are active even though the display is turned off.
