Q: iTunes not displaying artwork, unable to edit ID3 tags.

For almost 3 years, I have my iTunes Library, stored on my Synology Nas. It has worked flawlessly, until today.

OS X - El Capitan 10.11.4

iTunes - 12.3.3.17

I opened up my iTunes (as I always do).

I wanted to listen to music (as I always do).

3/4 of my music are SUDDENLY out of the blue missing Album Artwork.

- I tried to redownload the artwork (nothing happened)

Strike 1.

I then tried to do it manually, by doing a "Get Info" and then editing the tags and artwork.

- All tags, all options, anything in Get Info is GREYED OUT and unable to be edited.

Strike 2.

I restarted my iTunes Library a few times, restarted my Synology, my computer. Emptied out cache, etc.

Albums keep losing artwork. Example listed below.

Album ABC - missing artwork

Album DEF - has artwork

(Restart any device (iTunes, Synology, etc))

Album ABC - has artwork

Album DEF - suddenly lost it.

SO CONFUSED!!!!!!!!!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

There are regular posts of something strange happening when using a NAS with iTunes.  For some people they work, for others something suddenly goes wrong and nobody can explain why and there is never a "solution".  You can try wiping the NAS and restore the library form a backup.  Better would be to use a regular hard drive for your iTunes library and the NAS as a backup.

I ended up following these steps.

If you don't see your content after you update iTunes - Apple Support

I grabbed a previous Library file, deleted the old one. Everything magically works again.

Not sure, what happened or why. But I did find something interesting that I can't explain yet.

Using Finder....some albums did not have any artwork but in iTunes it displays.

    My example screenshot is below.

Finder displays only 1 track has that artwork.

iTunes says all those tracks have that artwork.

    Why the paradox?

What's the best way to keep things consistent?!

Yes, which is what I recommended in restoring your library file from a backup except in your case it dates back to when you last upgraded the iTunes application so anything you added since will not appear in the library.
