Q: Boot Camp

Hey, I am trying to install windows 10 on my macbook pro 9.2 13 inch through boot camp but my hdd doesnt want to partition. I tried the other things i have found in the apple discussions but for some reason none of thos methods work. I really need it ASAP for University

MacBook Pro, iOS 9.3.1

1. Backup OSX and all your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

2. Boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R) - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support .

3. Click on Utilties -> Disk Utility and Erase your internal whole disk.

4. Restore OSX and your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

This requires a separate external disk which can accommodate TM backup - Backup disks you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support .

What is the error message you get when BCA tries to partition the disk?

I tried the safe boot. I also tried repairing through disk utility as well as rebooted trying to perform the /shin/fsc. But sbin didnt start Up came up as error. Also reset NVRAM.

You need contiguous disk space for partitioning to work. Are you running El Capitan?

If you have a hard disk, the blocks on the disk can get fragmented leaving non-contiguous disk space. Even if you have 300GB free space, creating a 60GB partition, requires moving other partitions, which requires contiguous chunks.

The only clean solution is a Time Machine backup/erase/restore and re-running BC Assistant.

So do i pretty much have to factory reset my macbook to install windows. So delete everything and use time machine to back it up.

It is not a factory reset, because you are not setting up your accounts and other personalizations, but it is very close to it. The TM backup/restore will bring all your files back.

Do know how long the process could take and I also dont have time machine on. I just bought an portable hard drive for it. I have 400 gbs of data on the macbook. So all together an estimate. Or at least how long it will take to reset.

Firewire may be a bit faster than USB2, but your specific Mac can support USB3. If your external disk is capable of USB3, roughly 4Gbps ~ 500MBps is what you should expect. The first backup usually needs 400Gb x 1.5 for sorting, cataloging, etc. Give it about 2 hours.
