itunes unable to respond while trying an online activity

After updating itunes to the latest version, I have been unable to carry out any online activity like accessing the store or updating an app. Everytime it displays the message "iTunes has stopped working. Windows is checking for solution to the problem."

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.3.1
