How do I Password Protect a USB Stick or Drive?

I need to Password Protect USB sticks and maybe USB HDs too, how do I do this. Is there some way to do this using something native in MacOS X or do I need to use something else?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), 4G RAM, 500G HD, iPad4

I tried to give you a "Correct Answer" as well as "This helped me" but I guess you can't do both nor change them. This new setup is not intuitive.

KUDOS... for the"Correct Answer". The Finder method worked fine. I let the USB stick stay connected for 3hrs. I don't know if I actually needed that much time. Do you know if this method actually 'encrypts' all the data on the drive or just applies a login password?

By the way is the CAT(?) possessed ??? 👿 😀
