I have the iMac with 5k Retina display at home, and I have a work laptop that is a PC (Toshiba).
I would like to be able to hook my laptop up to my iMac so I can work on a large screen verus the tiny screen of my laptop.
Can this be done? If so, what kind of cable would I need? Could I use an HDMI cable for this? My laptop also has a VGA port.

no, target display mode only works for macs Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support
you can use programs such as air display and even vnc setups or programs such as teamviewer to have the mac display the pc's desktop but not by direct cable such as target display mode
Bummer! I kind of thought so but wanted to check on here to be sure. I'll just hook my laptop up to one of my TV's instead so I don't have to work on a tiny screen.
