BSOD system defender error

One of my kids must have downloaded something with Malware and now I am getting a BSOD System Defender Error Code 0x9error404 code. Every time I launch Safari the pop up happens and asks me to call an 800 number for tech support. I know its a scam but don't know how to fix. thanks.

Force quit Safari, then restart Safari while holding the shift key.

I just got something similar but in chrome.

Your OS X 10.11.4 Defender encountered an error Error code: 0x80016CFA

Of course it wants me to call "Microsoft Certified Technicians to resolve the issue" and warns me that if I shut down chrome or the mac it will result in possible failure of the operating system.....

Can I assume the same corrective action?

Thanks
