convert old avi files to new

i have a 2TB western digital external passport. It holds my grail of movies. How do i get to see them on my new Apple desk top since I'm getting a convert file dialog box without any response. I am assuming they are old avi files and need to convert them but how or what do i download to see them? Anyone help?
