Q: Router having hard time obtaining and holding an IP

I have a DSL line. I normally have a download speed about 10 mb/s.  Yesterday, it dropped down to 1.46 Mb/s.  I contacted my ISP.  This was the response,

"Connection looks good on our side. I do see the router having a hard time obtaining and holding an IP. I would suggest updating the firmware on the router if its not updated."

I see no firmware update available for my Airport/Time Capsule base station.  Any ideas why it would be having a hard time obtaining and holding an IP?

Is your AirPort handling the PPPOE connection or is it your modem? Is your internet connection cutting out when/before/after you lose connection quality?

Does it cut out when you use the landline? Does it have trouble on wet days?

Having your IP released and renewed signals DSL connection problems to me.

The primary basics for me have always been check your dsl filter (swap with another one in the house for testing), check the connection stats/log in the modem to see if your dropping your dsl connection as you should be able to see connection uptime OR you might see powered on time, if you see this uptime/on time is rather short your modem could be restarting due to power failure, restart all the devices between you and the internet, aka modem/airport etc etc.

For most DSL customers you will have a dynamic IP (in this case is you), which is usually refreshed once you reset your DSL connection (aka modem restarts or line problems between you and the exchange).

If the problem still persists after doing the primary basics the ISP should be able to run you through more specifics over the phone, they will mostly run you through DSL filter swaps/restarts/etc.
