Q: Can't Send SMS to non iMessage users!

This is probably my fourth post about this same issue as no one is giving me an answer, or telling me to try something that I stated didn't work.

I have an iPhone 6s with MetroPCS, for anyone who isn't using iMessage, the "add photo" icon is greyed out and it won't even let me send any attachment. Prior to this past update, i was able to select the "add attachment" button, but it always failed to send to the other person. I also cannot receive group messages from anyone, unless they're all using iMessage, as well as receive pictures from users who are also non iMessage. iMessage is turned on, and I have tried switching it on and off. SMS is selected as well. I tried taking out the sim card, turning the phone of, turning it back, on and reinserting the sim card, and that worked for only about 5 minutes, before greying out the add attachment button again. Cellular data and wifi are both on, both don't let me send an attachment. I have reset network settings, i've did a hard reset on my phone. I've did a basic reset of my phone, I know this isn't a carrier issue because it used to work, until after I did an update back in Nov 2015. Since then it has been less and less effective. Please someone help me.

    Hi keakuki,

I understand you are having trouble sending SMS and MMS messages or receiving group messages since you updated your iPhone.   Your profile indicates you are using iOS 9.3.  Have you updated to the latest version, which is iOS 9.3.1?  Once you have done that, the next step would be to see if MetroPCS has updated their software. since SMS and MMS messages have to go through their system.

If you can‘t send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Restart your device and check for updates

    1. Restart your device.
    2. Check for a carrier settings update.
    3. Check for an iOS software update.

    1. Make sure that you’re connected to the Internet through cellular data or Wi-Fi.
    2. Go to Settings > Messages. Check that the type of message that you're trying to send is turned on (iMessage, SMS, MMS, or Group messaging):

If your messages aren't sending, or you aren't getting messages

    Check your contact information:

    1. Make sure that you're using the right phone number or email address for the contact.
    2. Go to Settings > Messages > Blocked and make sure that the contact isn't on your block list.

If messages won't send to a certain person or you need help with group messages

Sometimes your messages won't send to a particular contact, or you might have issues with group messages. For example, you might reply to a group conversation and receive your own message. Or you might get a new phone number and see your old one listed as a recipient in an existing group conversation.

Delete the conversation* that has the issue and start a new conversation:

    1. Open Messages and look at your list of conversations.
    2. Swipe from right to left on the conversation you want to delete. Then tap Delete.
    3. Open Messages, tap  , and enter the phone number or email address of your contact or contacts.
    4. Write a new message and tap send.

*When you delete a conversation, you won’t be able to recover it. If you want to save parts of conversations or their attachments, you can take screenshots. You can also touch and hold an attachment or message bubble, then tap More > Save.

    Take care,

I am having the same issue on an AT&T iphone 5s. This seems to be an issue with the latest update 9.3.1 if you ask me looking at the number of posts about SMS message problems in the forum. What's apple doing about this??
