Q: Update 10.11.4 - SMTP Mail App

Hi,

after the update, all SMTP-Servers show "offline" in the OS X Mail app - no matter what I try. I checked username, password, SSL, EVERYTHING SEVERAL TIMES, it's all correct.

SMTP still works on iPhone and iPad, with the same username, ...

I tried every solution i could find online, nothing works... inculding deleting all my mail-accounts and re-configuring them.

THIS IS ANNOYING!

Checking connections in OS X Mail gives the following:

READ Apr 19 13:04:13.318 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone] -- host:mail.[XXXX].at -- port:587 -- socket:0x7f8ae535c123 -- thread:0x7f8ada4a4r6z8

220 ESMTP ready, no spam please

Window shows "Connecting to server..."

...30 seconds later...

WROTE Apr 19 13:04:40.819 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone] -- host:mail.[XXXX].at -- port:587 -- socket:0x7f8ae1e3d5g7 -- thread:0x7f8ada7gr6z8

EHLO [X.X.X.X]

READ Apr 19 13:04:40.822 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone] -- host:mail.[XXXX].at -- port:587 -- socket:0x7f8ae1e3d5g7 -- thread:0x7f8ada7gr6z8

421 Connection Timed Out

As i've said: it works on iPhone, iPad and I'm able to connect to the SMTP via telnet in the console... just OS X Mail app

Does anyone have a clue?!?

THX!!!!

    Hi alex_h1

    uhm... Yeah. Nice link.

did you recognize, that i wrote "tried everything" and that i have posted the output of mail connection doctor in my former post already?

I like to repeat, it works like a charm on ipad and iphone, also with webmail... the same server, username, password, settings. checked more than ten times, deleted, recreated accounts. But after the 10.11.4 os x update it's not willing to work anymore on my mac pro. See output of mail connection doctor in my former post: 220 ready, ehlo, 421 con timed out.

    ...?

    thx

    Hi Tiny,

You made no mention of going through connection doctor and the specific troubleshooting you've gone through.  Does Mail Connection Doctor show any red dots?  What are the actual messages you are seeing in Mail Connection Doctor.  It might be helpful if you provide a screenshot of the window.  If there's any other troubleshooting you've already done, please mention it specifically, as to avoid any repeats.

How to take a screenshot on your Mac

    Hi alex_h1

again, i have to refer to my first post, where i have mentionend connection doctor AND the output. But here it is again:

    READ Apr 19 13:04:13.318 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone] -- host:mail.[XXXX].at -- port:587 -- socket:0x7f8ae535c123 -- thread:0x7f8ada4a4r6z8

    421 Connection Timed Out

--- having a red dot shown for my SMTP server

The first hint connection doctor gives, is to try without SSL - done.

Next was to change port from 587 to 25 - done.

Next hint is to check username and password - done.

Last hint (this is the best one): there is a problem with the internet connection or the network.

As i have said before, it works in ipad, iphone, webmail, telnet - within the SAME network.

    Tried:

    - deleted all entries for SMTP in Keychain Manager and set them again

    - changed DNS servers

    - deleted all e-mail accounts and created them again (within mail app AND within settings)

    - deleted SMTP servers in mail app and created them again

    - tried everything again BUT force quit mail app

    - (of course, restartet the mac pro... NVRAM, ... all those things)

THX for your help - I'm really stuck...

Try creating an entirely new SMTP configuration.

If there's still an issue verify the SMTP server settings with your e-mail service provider.

Already tried before, done again. Same result.

    Checked server settings again.

As i have said before, I do it once again: it works on ipad, iphone, webmail, telnet - with the SAME settings, within the SAME network.

No idea what's going on. (10.11.4 Update - Bug?)

Have you checked with your email provider to see if they may have compatibility issues.

Create a new user account on your computer for testing purposed. Log into the test account add the email account there and see if it works.

    Hi,

You aren't the only one having this very same issue. I'm having the exact problem. I've tried every configuration that was listed online as well as followed the steps that Apple suggested. Still can't get my SMTP servers online.

Have you had any luck since your last post?

You can also try using the Safe Mode.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Sorry for the late reply - been on a business trip last few days.

Tried again, tried your suggestions, the problem still persists.

No new apps installed, no configuration changed - just updated to 10.11.4.

And as rseanjson said, it seems that i'm not the only one.

    Disappointed.

Similar issues here. Yesterday everything worked fine. Today, can receive email on SMTP accounts (but not Exchange), not able to send email from any account. Have not installed any new apps. Last 30 days updates are from Apple or Microsoft (OneDrive). Receiving/sending emails fine on all accounts using iPhone or PC. Have tried all remedies/solutions suggested on this thread to no avail. Connection Doctor shows all green, no issues.

Not sure if this has any relevance or not, but here is what I did about a week ago and so far everything is working fine:

Under Mail, Preferences, Accounts I found that there was no outgoing mail server selected. This happened after I updated El Capitan. I simply selected (in this case) "Exchange (Exchange)" and everything started working again for the account in question. I realize this seems way too simple, but in my case it worked. Have had no issues since. Hope this helps.

thx for your reply, but unfortunately this doesn't solve my problem... I've deleted, recreated and reselected my smtp several times without success.
