Q: itunes 12.3.3.17 stops working

Why does iTunes 12.3.3.17 keep crashing on Windows 7?  I had a problem a few weeks ago after updating to a newer version, but had to revert back to 12.3.3.17, and now it is failing.  Shortly after connecting iPhone 5S to laptop, iTunes launches, and immediately a pop up appears telling me to close the program because it stopped working.  It does sync without any problem if I first disconnect from the network.

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.2.1

12.3.3.17 should be the lastest version. I would try deleting and reinstalling following the steps here:

I have a co-worker with the same problem.  We have both reinstalled the client.  It seems to work fine for a day or 2, then it begins failing.  If you disconnect first from any network, wired or wireless, the sync process completes with no errors.  The problem seems to be some Windows network configuration conflicting with iTunes library.  I think the problem is that MS and Apple are not on the same page, possibly by design.

What antivirus are you using? McAfee by any chance?

Yes, McAfee.  Since this is an employer provided PC I cannot change that.

Also, when I tried to sync today I cannot get iTunes to launch at all.

That is the reason, McAfee is well know for interfering with iTunes. The reason I asked is that I had a similar issue and had to remove McAfee and go with MS Security Essentials on my old Windows 7 computer. On my new Dell W10 I use Windows Defender.

I realize that these are not options for you with an employer PC. This thread may shed additional information and possible workarounds.

All I know is that iTunes worked very well until the latest update in the last month to 6 weeks.  Now I cannot use it.

I've had McAfee installed for years while iTunes worked.  Is Apple providing a solution?  How do you suggest I sync moving forward?

I tried uninstalling all iTunes components using the process shared here.  Once I reinstalled the latest version iTunes the client launched and stopped working, had to stop the application.  I don't know where to go next.  It seems I cannot use my iPhone with my work laptop, and that is a huge problem for me.

I also had McAfee installed for years without a glitch on an old W7 computer however in June 2015 iTunes stopped working properly for me. I posted on the iTunes for Windows forum and a very knowledgeable fellow by the name of turingtest2 (tt2) advised me to ditch McAfee. I did and have not had issues since. While I still have that computer (no issues with MS Security Essentials) I now use a W10 computer with Windows Defender, no issues either.

According to tt2, the issue is with McAfee, not iTunes, as McAfee is very intrusive and does not follow protocols. Other AVs do not cause this issue.

tt2 provided other possible solutions, start here and follow the links from there:  Welcome screen keeps coming up every time iTunes is opened

I suggest you post in that forum and elicit his help. He may be able to give you other suggestions. He is a great guy.
