Click here and try following the instructions; you'll only be able to do so if you previously got iPhoto from or associated it with the Mac App Store.

You need iPhoto 9.6.1 - see Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

However it is  a dead product and you can no longer order print products using it - sooner or later it will quit working altogether with some future upgrade - Photos pretty much matches or exceeds iPhoto in all respects (it is different and requires some different work flow and does have a learning curve) so I recommend learning and using Photos

The error message is misleading.  You will see it, whenever you try to update an iPhoto version, that has not been purchased from the AppStore but on an installer DVD.

You cannot update iPhoto at all from the App Store, because Apple stooped the development. You can only update by reinstalling an iPhoto version that is associated with your AppleID at the AppStore (as described in the link that Niel and Larry posted: here). In all other cases it is not possible, because you need iPhoto 9.6.1, and that was never sold outside the AppStore.
