Trying to wipe an iPhone 5

Hi,

I've just bought an iPhone SE, so am trying to wipe my iPhone 5 in order to sell it. However I keep getting the message 'Verification Failed, There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server'. I am definitely putting in the correct password, any ideas?
