Apr 20, 2016 9:30 AM in response to LarryHNby pinkmurex,I don't know exactly how many images, I never kept track. However, I'm sure the count was in multiples of thousands. My Seagate Backup Drive says I have 38.28 GB of info in iphoto. "Photos" still reads at 24% complete.

Apr 20, 2016 10:00 AM in response to LarryHNby pinkmurex,My entire library was on my desktop. Of course I can not access it now while the new PHOTOS is stuck. I believe most, if not all, is backed up on my external drive. The latest backup was done yesterday.

Apr 20, 2016 10:04 AM in response to pinkmurexby LarryHN,If by tonight it is still at 24% (which is likely) you need to force quit, reboot and try again
what version of iPhoto do you have? And under Yosemite were you using iPhoto or Photos?

Apr 20, 2016 10:20 AM in response to LarryHNby pinkmurex,I was using iPhoto. The version that came with Yosemite, I think. I'll do as you suggest, wait until this evening then "force quit". Then I would need to try again, right?

But since you have iPhoto 9.6.1 go through this prep before restarting the migration -- Notes on Migrating an iPhoto Library from iPhoto to Photos for Mac
and be aware of how the migration works -- How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support
and of the differences in the programs -- Photos 2.0 vs iPhoto 9.6.1: Features and Capabilities
And of course always have a good, current backup - especially when you are doing upgrades
