Q: Unknown 4 digit password for a new to me 4s.

I Just received an iPhone 4s from a friend and was trying to reset it but can access the admin part of the phone due to a lack of a 4 digit code. The original owner doesn't remember what it would've been but does have the phone set to erase after 10 incorrect attempts. If this happens, will it allow me to set the device up as new without needing that info?
