Q: Passcode Requirement "You must change your iPhone unlock passcode within 52 minutes."

My dad is very upset and frustrated, and so am I. I hope we can be compensated in someway (but probably not).

My dad unlocked his iPhone 5S as normal, then he got a notification on the home screen that said "Passcode Requirement You must change your iPhone unlock passcode within 52 minutes."  We've never seen this notifcation before, and my sister and I have an iPhone 6/6 Plus.  I told my dad to just ignore it, but then it kept showing up every time he unlocked his phone, so then I told him to choose continue.

He chose Continue, changed the passcode from a 4 digit to a longer one, and then he restarted his phone.

Upon restart, the phone asks you to put in a passcode for the first log in attempt before it enables you to use touch ID.  He inputted the new passcode but it didn't work.  He attempted it multiple times, and now it shows there's a 60 minute wait.  At this point, he's just going to keep putting in the passcode until it resets his phone.

Why did this happen to begin with? He has an iPhone 5S under AT&T with the latest iOS version.

The new, longer password that he tried inputting is correct, because when you create the password, it asks you to input it twice, and he wouldn't have been able to continue if he didn't put it in correctly twice.  So why did the passcode not work?

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.3.1, AT&T

    Hello gabemstr,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I see from your post that your Dad's iPhone is showing an error saying: passcode requirement you must change your unlock passcode.  It appears your Dad has a managed iPhone, with a profile installed on it.  When a device is managed, it can have certain passcode requirements such as a passcode age.  I suggest your Dad gets in contact with his IT staff, or deletes the profile.

By default, the user’s passcode can be defined as a six-digit PIN on Touch ID-capable devices or a four-digit PIN on all other devices. In iOS, you can choose from an extensive set of passcode policies to meet your security needs. These passcode policies can include requirements for:

    • A passcode on an iOS device

    • An alphanumeric value

    • Minimum passcode length

    • Minimum number of complex characters

    • Maximum passcode age

    Passcode policies

    1. Delete the configuration profile that came with the app.

      • Go to Settings > General > Profile, tap on the app’s configuration profile.
      •
      • Then tap Delete Profile. If asked, enter your device passcode, then tap Delete.
    2. Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

How to delete an app that has a configuration profile on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    Take care.
