share idvd to an external DVD burner

The optical drive on my 2009 mini mac has died . I need to burn a completed project to DVD. I have attached an external DVD burner to the mac. I plays DVDs . How do I get it to record from iDVD please ?

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

I had a similar set up on one of my Mac Minis. My internal optical drive still works fine but I purchased an external burner because Apple's optical drive cannot burn M-DISC. (M-DISC is all we use now.)

Do not burn your DVD from iDVD. Instead, use iDVD to create an image file and then burn the image file using Disk Utilities. Disk utilities will go out and look for all of your connected drives and it should find the external one, (it does with us).
