Q: dell 5k display with 2013 Mac Pro under El Capitan

So, after years of waiting for Apple to make a display that makes fun use of the Mac Pro's capability I gave up and bought the Dell UP2715K 27 inch UltraSharp Ultra-HD 5K Monitor.

It uses two cables in parallel to transmit the 5k signal.  There is help on the Dell site and apparently it works at 5K with the 2013 Mac Pro under Yosemite, but there's no mention of El Capitain (why does typing that silly OSX name make me so angry).

So, the question, has anyone got it running under El Capitain at 5 K with the 2013 dustbin Mac Pro.

Thanks

Stephen

Use 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs with your Mac - Apple Support

    Apple says

    Dual-cable displays

Some displays with resolutions higher than 4K require two DisplayPort cables to connect the display at full resolution. With OS X Yosemite v10.10.3 or later, the Dell UP2715K 27-inch 5K display is supported on the following Mac computers:

    • Mac Pro (Late 2013)
    • iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014 and later)
    • MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with AMD Radeon R9 M370X

    Hi Illaass,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, thanks for the link, I had read that page prior to purchasing the display, and yes is should work, it does have two cables to get the 5k and should work in theory (I think, but is not specifically listed as working under El Capitan at 5K)

It currently gives a higher resolution on a single cable to the mini DP on the display than on the twin ones, so the reverse of what it should.

Do you actually have this display running with the 2013 Mac Pro? in which case, can I ask which of the 6 thunderbolt ports you are using please?

    Thanks

No, all I have is a Dell 4K monitor.

The article does say "or later" after Yosemite so that to me clearly indicates it will work with EC.

With OS X Yosemite v10.10.3 or later

TThanks for that - although currently i might as well have the 4K too, as that's the best I can get. Agree that "Yosemite or later" means it should, but perhaps not "will" work, it's not unknown for Apple to silently remove pre-existing functionality from their software. As I mentioned, Dell only talk of Yosemite, so perhaps I've messed up!

Hopefully theres a Dell 5K user out there who can confirm it works - or even that it doesnt any more - at least it will save me time searching if not give me the answer I want to hear.

    Thanks again.

I have a chance to test with Mac Pro and 3 units of 5K Dell monitor UP2715K connected together and work fine under EI Capitan 10.11.5.

    It looks great.

But be reminded to select the Hold the "Option" key and click the Scale option under Display of the System Preference to show the 5K setting or else you won't figure it from the icon (default) provided.

    Enjoy the 5K!
