"Open recent" only shows "clear menu"

When I pull up the "open recent" tab in Numbers (and in Pages), it only shows "Clear Menu" -- it doesn't show my recent files. I thought I fixed this once before. Why's it defaulting to "Clear Menu" and how can I change it back so that it gives me my actual recently opened documents?

Hi Ken,

Possibly a recent update reset the Open Recent to zero.

Open System Preferences > General > Recent Items.

Type a number (say 10)

Quit System Preferences.

If Numbers is running, save your work, Quit and restart Numbers.

Open a few Numbers documents and Open Recent will start listing them.

Ian.

Sorry - I've had this same problem for months. I've set and re-set the System Preferences, General, Recent Items countless times and, as explained by others, the setting isn't saved and when I go back in to check it, the setting has reverted to "None". At one point, 3 weeks ago, it fixed itself and, shortly afterwords, it reverted to "Clear Menu" and None".

Please can anyone explain and fix?

Hi ParaDara,

I don't know if this will work, but often quitting apps and shutting down your machine, then rebooting will clear temporary files and give you a clean start.

Try this (Bold for the extra steps added to my first reply:

Open System Preferences > General > Recent Items.

Type a number (say 10)

Quit System Preferences.

If Numbers is running, save your work, Quit and restart Numbers.

Shut down and restart your machine.

Open Numbers.

Open a few Numbers documents and Open Recent will start listing them.

Any improvement?

Regards,

Ian.
