close the browser or download application if it is open.
go to the folder the incomplete download resides in
e.g.
Macintosh HD/Users/[your account]/downloads
and delete any unfinished download (usually ending with the name ".download") by highlighting and putting it in the trash.

to delte an unfinished APP STORE Download
close the app store application
open terminal
type
open $TMPDIR../C/
press return and delete the folder
com.apple.appstore
open app store and begin the download again.

Apr 20, 2016 11:21 AM in response to JimmyCMPITby denhomphotos,Thanks for trying to help, but the files are already in the Trash, but will not empty, even if I force empty. I cannot put them back, can't rename them, just a lot of can't's. Again, I appreciate your help, but that doesn't work.

sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*
You might be asked to enter your admin password which will not show, but just enter it and press Enter.
