Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
From your post, it sounds like this iPhone has Activation Lock on it with someone else’s Apple ID. If this is correct, you would need the other person to enter their Apple ID password to unlock the device as described in the following article.
If the device is erased
Ask the previous owner to enter their Apple ID and password on the Activate iPhone screen to remove the device from their account.
If the previous owner isn't present, contact them and ask them to follow these steps to remove the device from their account:
- Sign in to iCloud with their Apple ID.
- Go to Find My iPhone.
- Select All Devices to open a list of devices linked to their account, then select the device to be removed.
- Click Remove from Account.
After the previous owner removes the device from their account, turn off the device and then turn it back on to begin the setup process.
Turn off Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support
Cheers!

If not you can try going to an Apple Store with whatever proof of purchase you got but I am not optimistic due to privacy reasons.

Apr 21, 2016 1:41 PM in response to foolviviby gail from maine,Your online record should be enough of a proof of purchase for you to get help in an Apple Store. I would suggest that you go to your Apple Online Store account, click on Apple Store Account (at the bottom of the Apple Store page), then under Orders, click on Print an Invoice, find the invoice you want to print and print that to take with you.
They should be able to help you out.
Best of luck,
GB
