Google maps fails to get online. IOS 9.3.1

When I open google maps in my iPad Pro (big screen), the screen shows my current location, but no details about local roads, etc. If I set a destination , nothing happens for a while then returns info not available offline. Other apps show phone and Wi-Fi both healthy and strong. Anyone got a clue?
