Q: Pink and Green Lines When jpeg used in iMovie

Hi all,

I have a strange problem to which I can't find an answer for the internet. Whenever I used a jpeg or png file as a background or as a picture-on-picture within a film, upon exporting the movie the space where the picture file was is replaced by a series of pink and green 'buzzing' or flicking horizontal lines. I have just ensured I have updated to the latest version of El Capitan and iMovie (10.1.1). Attached is an example of a jpeg file used as a background and what it looks like upon exporting. It looks fine within the iMovie preview.

I am using the green-screen feature here, and it was a test video with just a mic stand moving around.

Thanks for any help!

This type of problem was experienced with iMovie 11 running under El Capitan but not with iMovie 10.1.1. You stated you upgraded to 10.1.1 and are still seeing this problem. Try creating a new library and new project and  see if you can reproduce the issue. Perhaps your iMovie 11 library didn't upgrade to 10.1.1 properly.

Hi Jim, thank you for the reply. Apologies, meant to select iMovie '13 as the one I have rather than '11.

I've done as you suggested and started a new project as well as restarting iMovie, but the issue is still there.

Any other ideas would be fantastic!

I don't understand iMovie 13, do you mean 10.1.1? That is the version that runs correctly in El Capitan. Am I correct in understanding that if you place a clip in the timeline and add a photo above it and for the photo select picture in picture then it plays fine in timeline but upon sharing it exhibits the buzzing green and pink lines on the movie or just the pip.

Yes iMovie '13 is now normally referred to as iMovie 10.

I have seen several recent reports of behaviour like this.  It appears that there are still some photo formats that are not working with the latest version of iMovie (10.1.10 under El Capitan even though this version was reported to have solved such problems.  Previous versions gave problems with stills with certain Macs and not others, (probably depending on the graphics card version) though these problems were visible in the timeline and not only after sharing.  Does it occur whatever export settings and destination you use?

I can only suggest you file a bug report at: http://www.apple.com/feedback/imovie.html

giving details of your exact Mac model and the format of the affected photos.  Any others with this problem should do the same.

Maybe you could also post these details here.  If others with the problem do the same we may begin to see a pattern.

    Geoff.

Thank you again for the suggestions. Yes, just to clarify it is iMovie 10.1.1. I am running a MacBook Pro 2012 (I wonder if the age of my machine has anything to do with it?).

Yes, the problem is whenever I use a .jpg, .gif or .png file as either a background or a picture-on-picture. The above screenshot was from using a plain white .jpg background, and I've attached an example where I've used a .jpg as a picture-in-picture. The background in this instance was the iMovie white background (rather than creating my own .jpg white background as above)>

The preview within iMovie works perfectly. I have changed the file sharing options and the file destination but the same problem occurs.

I'll file a bug report also. Please let me know if it would be helpful to post anymore information here. Screen Shot 2016-04-24 at 08.43.29.png

If you are still experiencing this problem I found a work around after several hours with an Apple technician.

    1. Back out of your project in iMovie to the "My Projects"

    2. Highlight the project you are working on that is having the issue (don't double click it to open it)
    3. In the edit tab "Create Duplicate" or command D
    4. Once the duplicate is created select it, open it then export.

This worked for me. Hopefully it will for you as well!

I exported as a .mov and there were no pink photos

EXport as A .mp4 and after each attempt there were more and more pink

the green photos :  were beaten by re-importing into a new event with a different name and also less than 5MB in size

my movie was 2hours 38 long.
