Q: Advice regarding creating new apple id

When creating a new apple id what is best practice? Create a new apple id using an @icloud.com address or using an existing email address (gmail, outlook etc.)? I have no intentions to use iCloud as main email but what address will provide most flexibility and best user experience with iCloud, iOS and OS X?

Is it wise to use two separate apple ids, one for iCloud services and another for iTunes and App Store purchases?

For simplicity, I recommend you only use ONE Apple ID. Purchases made through the App or iTunes Store are PERMANENTLY tied to the Apple ID. They cannot be transferred to another Apple ID. If, for some reason you need to CHANGE your Apple ID, see this:

Thank you! The main reason I ask is because like many others I have an old non-icloud Apple ID with purchases. I have never tied an icloud email adress within this Apple ID and I don't know if it's even necessary. But If I do want an icloud address I thought it would be better to make a brand new Apple ID account with an icloud address and use it for icloud services, and keep the old ID for purchases. Can I as a workaround, incorporate the old Apple ID within family sharing and use the new Apple ID for new purchases?

If you go to the first link and enter your old Apple ID, it will suggest changing that ID to the e-mail address associated with the ID. I have read that doing this preserves your old purchases.

I think it is best to set up iCloud using your current ID. That way, you have both iCloud and your existing Apple ID and purchases all under one Apple account. You can use your Apple ID email and the linked iCloud email interchangeably for all Apple services if you do it that way:

Click on the computer or device that you want to set iCloud up on, and then follow the prompts.
