iPad Pro 9.7 inch, cellular does not work as a hotspot

in Switzerland advertised as working with Swiss telephony internet providers, and can be used as a personal hotspot.

It doesn't work. I took to an Apple shop, and they tried with my SIM card, with other models, like iPad Air2, and it shows Personal Hotspot on the setting. But not on my iPad Pro 9.7 cellular version. So they took their own display model from the Apple shop, and it shows the same as my own iPad Pro, meaning does not show "personal hotspot". The Apple technician told me it is a problem with the telephony provider Sunrise. But I have iPhone 6, iPad Air2, and it works with them fine. These shows "personal hotspot". I took to Sunrise telephone shop, they checked my card, account, and tried with several of their shop models with my SIM card, and it all worked.

I got home, i took my SIM card from my iPhone, put into the Pro, doesn't work but works with my Air2. I took Swisscom, which works in iPhone 6, iPad Air2, showing "personal hotspot" but not on my iPad Pro 9.7 inch model. I tried all variations, all models are running on IOS 9.3.1. the only combinations of various SIM cards and iPhones and iPads, the only combination doesn't show Personal Hotspot on the setting menu is the iPad Pro 9.7 inch model.

Apple shop tells me nothing wrong with their product. Sunrise says nothing wrong with their side, and I'm left alone.

BTW, the Apple shop staff could not even show me a working model, i.e. their display model of iPad Pro 9.7 with cellular with setting menu displaying Personal Hotspot on/off. if they don't have a working model to show it to me, how can they say nothing wrong with Apple.

Can someone help me?

Try this:

To set up or configure a mobile hotspot over Wi-Fi, follow these steps:

Note: Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot settings cannot be changed when Wi-Fi sharing is turned on.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap Personal Hotspot.
    • If this option is not available, tap Cellular > Set Up Personal Hotspot to activate the feature.
    • Your account must support this or you will receive a prompt to contact Customer Care
  3. Tap the toggle switch to turn on Personal Hotspot.

I amnin Apple shop and their technician. And their conclusion is;

IPad Pro 9.7 inch version does not support Personal Hotspot for a Telephone company provided SIM (I have Sunrise.ch and Swisscom.ch)

Is it true? They have tried a few combination, and using my SIM card. They tried with the shop's demo iPads. IPad Probwith 12.9 inch model with cellular, it works. IPad Air2 of mine, they tried, and it works. But iPad Pro 9.7 inch versi it does not work.

They checked and my purchase was over two weeks ago. I mentioned I did brought back to Apple shop but they didn't inform me, and first of all, they should Not have sold it to me if this was the case. And they should also mention that in their Swiss web site as well.

So they registered my case, and also gave me a card so that if I wish I can return the iPad Pro 9.7 inch, including the Apple case and cover to the shop.

I mentioned that then the Apple website should be updated and Apple staff be trained accordingly.

Hey...had the same issue ..no personal hotspot option..

Just try this out...it worked out for me..and now my ipad pro 9.7 shows the personal hotspot button in settings when i on the cellular net.

1. go to settings

2. cellular > cellular settings > APN

3. the last box will be for Personal hotspot....

4. copt paste your first carrier provided APN name to the APN name in last box under personal hotspot

Like i said this worked for me..and now i can route my net to other devices.

Also not an apple issue, if you need you APN name just contact the sim provider...

I have the same problem. The only "solution" is to enter the APN from your provider manually in the Mobile Data settings. Swisscom for instance is: gprs.swisscom.ch

For me however, this is only a workaround until the provider or Apple have fixed the problem. If you put a SIM-Card in your device, the settings should always be pulled automatically! Put the same SIM into an iPad 4 or Air2 and there is no problem.

The workaround lets you use hotspot - but all SIM-services do not work (for instance the Swisscom Cockpit authentication)

I will let you know as soon as I have found out more. I think the issue must be resolved by the providers Carrier-settings. But it could just as well be an Apple issue.
