My new iphone 6s says 'no service' so I can't send or receive messages.

I have my old iphone 5c right next to it (was trying to transfer info) and am still receiving texts, e-mails, etc. so I don't think it's that. I am also receiving emails on my iphone 6s but just no messages, and it says 'failed to send' when I try and send a test text to myself. Any ideas? I backed up my 5c and restored my 6s to that which downloaded all my text messages but hasn't done it since I updated the 6s back to the newest iOS (9.3.1).

A tool is not really necessary, you can use a paper clip. But, you say that you sent/received a test text. Was it an SMS, or was it an iMessage? An iMessage does not require cellular service, it can be done over wi-fi. If you are not sure if the SIM is active, then is this a new SIM you got in the phone, or did you move this SIM from your old phone? Again, I believe you need to check with your cellular carrier about the status of the SIM you have in the phone.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and thorough advice. Going to have to chalk this one up to 'user error' as I hadn't finished activating my new phone on the carrier's site (the ONE thing I didn't check! Arghhh!) I appreciate it, though, and now I'm on to my new problem of not being able to forward the last two days' worth of texts that I didn't get from my 5c to my 6s, but I'm sure there's probably a solution for that that I hadn't thought of as well...
