Mac OS XRun Software Update to ensure that you're current with OS X, then remove the printer and re-add it and see if that clears up whatever's gone weird here, then — if that fails — check with HP support. (HP provides the drivers necessary for their printers to Apple, so Software Update will get you the latest available bits. If the printer still isn't working, then HP support are the folks that have information on how to resolve this.)

Apr 21, 2016 8:23 PM in response to MrHoffmanby sabinafromvandoeuvre-les-nancy,My mac is not showing me at all that the printer is connected to the system. However, the printer is working perfectly fine with the windows machine with the same old settings. Its just the update that caused the problem. My USB ports are also working fine.
I've rechecked for the updates, there's no new update
HP doesn't provide 1020 driver for the mac, however Apple does in a package "HP Printer Drivers v3.1 for OS X". There is another package "HP Printer Driver 1.1.1" that contains specifically 1020's driver but it doesn't install on my mac. Anyways v3.1 worked perfectly fine.
Thanks,
I hope it gets resolved.

Mac OS XIs this the particular LaserJet 1020 printer you're using? Why do I ask? HP has a gazillion printers, and more than a few have very similar product names and product numbers, unfortunately.
Based on what HP has posted at their support page, that printer doesn't have a separate download for OS X — which is typical of HP printers with OS X drivers. HP provides the drivers that are used here, and provides those drivers directly to Apple. If you have run Software Update, then you have the latest drivers available from HP, as delivered to Apple and then as Apple delivers those to your Mac via Software Update.
If the printer is powered on and is working with Microsoft Windows, then check with HP support directly. ...But based on what HP has posted, they (HP) no longer appear to support this printer. (That is the HP LaserJet - Driver and software support for OS X 10.7 and OS X 10.8 article from HP — the HP web link URLs tend to change, unfortunately — and that web page indicates that the LaserJet 1020 printer isn't supported on releases rather older than 10.11. Given production started in 2005 according to Wikipedia, that's not a huge surprise.) The HP support status for that printer can be confirmed directly with HP support.

iTunesIf you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.
