Q: I have a new mac book pro, i need to copy my stuff from my old mac book pro

hi all, i have just splashed the cash and got myself a new mac book pro, without the DVD drive.

I would now like to transfer all my stuff from my old mac book pro, the easiest and quickest way possible.

while i was in the shop spending my money, the fella told me i can do it by connecting the two computers together via Firewire/Thunderbolt and using Time Machine !.

I have a Firewire/Thunderbolt adapter and a Firewire Cable :-)

But i would like to have somebody, somewhere point me in the right direction so that i dont mess up, i havent done this, this way before, is there Step by Step details anywhere please, i am unable to find any info anywhere else !

Thanks for looking and if you can help/advise so much the better :-)

Tim

The "easiest and quickest way" is to boot your old MacBook Pro in Target Disk mode and follow the directions in Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support.

Instruction for booting in Target Disk Mode -> Share files between two computers with target disk mode - Apple Support

I just went thru a similar situation.  Replaced my iMac with a new Macbook Pro.  I used Apple's Migration Assistant.  Piece of cake!

Thank you very much both of you, that was perfect, so much easier than i thought it would ever be, the whole migration took under 2 hours, i was well pleased.

now i have to tearfully part with my outgoing best friend, i could trade it in for an Apple Gift Voucher or i could give it to my eldest daughter, who will never use it or i could try and sell it on Ebay !!!!!!!!

Before parting with the old, be sure to wipe its drive clean and reinstall the original OS that came with it (or at least the one authorized to install on it). That will ensure your personal information does not leak away to third parties who might misuse it, together with any licensing for commercial software you might have installed.

Holler if you need aid in how to perform this.

cheers buddy, that is excellent advice thanks, but as it happens, one of the above links, contains a link to page that tells me how to scrub out and reinstall OS X on my outgoing  lap top :-https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201065

thank you all for being so helpful

PS. when i first went to switch on my new slim line lap top, i thought where has the Power button gone ??????     LOL.

And then i noticed the DVD/CD drive EJECT  button/icon had gone, didnt need it did I, i then, slowly realised the picture had changed on the Eject button. and this was the Power button !!!!

And when you press it when on, you'll discover that it does not shut the Mac off, merely makes it go to sleep. Shut down is an item in the Apple menu.

As for the scrubbing of the drive, it is so important that it merits being mentioned explicitly every so often. Far too many tales of eBay-purchased computers containing vast and dark secrets in the full drives.
