Have you tried signing out of the Messages App? Settings>Messages>Send & Recieve>click on your Apple ID, and Sign Out. Then sign back in and see if the problem is resolved.

Yes, I tried that, but the problem was that everytime I went to messages (in settings), I wouldn't be signed in at all--and I would try signing in, with the same result as in the app itself. I did finally fix it--by updating to the newest iOS (I had the most recent version before that). After that, I no longer had the verification problem.

when I've clicked to verify its taken me to the manage ID page, I've entered my username and password and my details have come up including my email address, bank details, phone number etc but nothing I can click on to 'verify'. Can someone please help me?!

This is clearly a bug in the system. I have the same problem, verify button nowhere to be found on the Apple ID page.

Apple is slowly crumbling. Stopped using iPhone for a few years already, time to say bye bye to iPad as well. after each update, it becomes slower and slower.
