my purchased song only 128kbps I designated apple lossless

I just purchased gwen stefani's new song "wind it up". I played it and thought the sound sucked. I "got info"on the song and it said 128 kbps.I designated apple lossless on importing but didnt see a setting for the itunes store quality. How do I set the store quality purchases?

Your import settings only apply to the CD's that you rip yourself, not store purchases. The store sell downloads in AAC @ 128, that is ALL they sell. There is nothing you can do to obtain better quality on your store purchases.

Thanks for the reply. I cant believe this! I just paid a ton of money for a 30g ipod and shure e500 earphones! I want to be able to download music in large files for maximum quality. Do I have to download somewhere else in 320 kbps or wave and import to apple lossless? Why dont they have a higher quality file?

Most record companies will not allow for CD quality downloads. The record companies provide Apple with the files, so it is up to them not Apple. The one site I know about that has high bitrate downloads is in protected WMA format which is not compatible with an iPod anyway.

In 2 1/2 years of owning an iPod, I learned over a period of time that I also did not care for the bitrate of store downloads, so I have gone back to purchasing CD's to insure that I can get good audio quality. I will still make the occasional store purchase for individual songs when I don't care to purchase the whole CD.

Thanks again. I have been downloading from alltunes or allofmp3 and they offer downloads with wave or 320kbps. I am an audiophile and I think 128 is not going to cut it. What do you have in hardware for playing? And what earphones do you have? Also I noticed that the ipod doesnt have a eq custom.

You want to be very careful with allo as the legality of that site is very much in question. I have Shure E3C earphones & a Bose SoundDock, plus a pair of B & O earphones. The Shure's make the B & O's sound like trash.

Why would you convert a lossy file to lossless? Since the data is already removed, it will not improve the quality at all. It will ONLY increase the file size.

Also I noticed that the ipod doesnt have a eq custom.
EQ? You said you were an audophile.

My friend wave is not lossy it is lossless. The file on a typical wave file is 40 mb. The file on a aac mpeg4 is 8.7mb. I said either one which is better than the lousy 128kbps. One of the biggest complaints I read about is the lack of custom eq. I have a eq on my 30000 dollar stereo> I play the music the way I want. Getting the file size right is the main thing. Its like shooting with a 3 mp camera and a 45mp camera. The grand canyon looks similiar but not great for nuiance.

320 kbps is lossy.

Getting the file size right is the main thing.
Shouldn't the quality be the main thing?
Size can be irrelevant.

Yes, you are right. 320kbps is lossy with a typical file being around 8.7mb.It sounds much better than 128 where the file is 3. The file size is proportionate to the quality. I guess I am going to have to burn from cds like stardeb does. My 30gb ipod will hold them.Thanks everyone who chimed in.
