Apple Recycling Program - Needs Recycling

Apple have a recycling program. See http://www.apple.com/recycling/

Apple recently announced they had recovered vast amounts of metals including gold as a result of this program. (There is gold in them thar Macs!)

See http://money.cnn.com/2016/04/15/technology/apple-gold-recycling/

However sadly there is a huge flaw in Apple's recycling program. 😢

As we all know and so should Apple, their devices tend to last a very long time, far longer than equivalent Windows products. This has meant that by the time I have been able to persuade senior management to allow me to dispose of old items they are considered too old by Apple and they refuse to accept them for recycling.

This is despite the fact they contain if anything greater amounts of gold, it is also despite the fact that the PowerMac G5 tower as an example has a solid aluminium case practically identical to a Mac Pro and aluminium as Apple keep boasting is 'eminently recyclable'.

This sadly is not the first time I have had this problem with Apple it is not even the first company I have worked at that has had this problem.

So once again I have a significant number of old Apple computers that Apple will not accept for recycling and I am having to once again find another less eco-friendly method for disposing of them.

Apple you need to wake up. No-one is going to offer you a one year old or three year old Mac for recycling when they will still be perfectly usable and able to run the very latest version of OS X. 😟

It may be that the information at http://www.apple.com/recycling/ is a bit confusing. The sections with the headings for "iPad, iPhone, Smartphone" and "Mac Desktop, Notebook, or PC" are both for recycling in exchange for a gift card. The third section -- labeled "iPod or Any Older Devices" appears to handle what you want. Here is a more direct link to where that section leads: http://oem.srsapp.com/applepoweredbysims/

We are in the UK so maybe the program is slightly different but even the UK page - which was recently changed, says newer than 2007 or take in to an Apple Store. Because a pile of old PowerMac G5 computers is 'not light' we took the precaution of ringing the Apple Store before trying to carry them to them even from the side of the street and they said no.

So the man from Del Monte Apple - he say no.
