Q: iPod lock icon

I am trying to restore and older iPod ca. 2005.  I have replaced the battery and now every time I plug in the earphone a lock icon appears and everything quits working.  I have charged the battery and then let it run down.  Hold button is off and the iPod has been reset several times (press Menu & Select for 10+ seconds).  What next?

iPod classic, 30GB color photos/music etc

There are two iPod models from around 2005 with a color screen and 30GB storage.  One is the 4th gen iPod, also called iPod photo.  The other is the 5th gen iPod, also often called iPod video.  Then 4th gen iPod looks more like previous iPods (except for color screen) and does not play videos.  Which one do you have?

If you do a Reset (restart) on the iPod

does this problem still occur?  Also, try a different set of headphones, to rule out headphones with a faulty plug that is causing a short-circuit in the headphones jack of iPod?  Since this occurs when you plug in headphones, you should also shine a flashlight into the headphones jack to visually confirm there is no debris.

    Kenichi.

"There are two iPod models from around 2005 with a color screen and 30GB storage."  I have the one that was OEM'd by H/P.  It does not play videos.

I have done all you have suggested...  Including a total system reset & software reload from iTunes 12.3.3 (October 2015 because iTunes 12.3.17 no longer recognizes older hardware).  Yes, I have MENU/Select rebooted and MENU/Select totally reset.  Nothing works.  The only possible issue is that I have somehow damaged the phone jack receptacle when I replaced the battery.  Could it be iTunes or something in the system reset?

    Thanks for your help,

iTunes would not cause this problem.  Since the problem started after you opened the iPod, it's probably related in some way, especially since the headphones jack and Hold switch are on the same assembly that is connected to iPod's the logic board with a delicate ribbon cable.

Yes, I have MENU/Select rebooted and MENU/Select totally reset.

I don't know what the second one is; it's just a Reset (restart) without any options.  A "total reset" would be a Restore, which is done using iTunes.  You can try doing that too, which erases the iPod, reinstalls its software, and sets it to default settings

Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

If the problem recurs after doing a Restore, the cause is likely to be a hardware problem on the iPod.
