El Capitan scanning

I have installed elCapitan 10.11.4 and now my Canon MP240 will no longer scan through image capture. It continues to function as a printer, but produces an error when trying to connect to the scanner through Image Capture. I have reset the printer multiple times to no avail. I have downloaded a trial of Vuescan, which does work, but I do not really want to spend $80 on this solution. Graphic converter is a cheaper option, but works through Image capture for scanning, so is a no go. Does anyone have any workarounds?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

I don't have experience with Canon printers, but my Epson printer can scan starting at System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

I suggest you look there and see if you find a "Scan" button like this:

Apple's Canon printer drivers do not support the MP240.

Printer and scanner software available for download for your Mac - Apple Support

SO you'll have to get your printer driver software from Canon's website.

Thanks for that, but Canon have no drivers for the MP240 for 10.11.4.

I am now looking for a generic TWAIN driver that will work without the cost of Vuescan. Any recommendations?

I found the following driver on their website. https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/self-help-center/Mac-O SX-Compatibility/

There is a drive for MP230 and MP250, but not MP240.

Might be worth a try to try one of the other 2.

The Scan tab in Printers & Scanners uses an ICA driver - not a TWAIN driver. The last ICA driver that Canon released for the MP240 was for OS X 10.9. This should still install and function on 10.11 so here is a link to the Canon ICA v3.1.0 driver. Note that after installing this driver you should restart the Mac and when you have logged back in see if you can use the Scan tab without the error you show above.
