iphone SE won't connect to iTunes

I recently purchased an iphone SE (4/21/16) and it will not connect with my iTunes on my MacBook Air. I have iOS 9.3.1 installed on the SE, and iTunes 12.2.2 installed on my MacBook Air. Every time I connect my phone it says "The iPhone cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes." I have restarted my computer and done a hard restate on my new phone. Help!

iPhone SE, iOS 9.3.1
