My designated backup external hard drive wont show up

So I have a 1 terabyte Seagate hard drive I use it as an external Time Capsule backup for my computer but when I try to plug it into day the computer wasn't able to recognize the hard drive or if it did and never showed up in my devices or what I tried to do the backup. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, iOS 9.3.1

When connected to the Mac:

- Is the drive self-powered, that only powered by the USB bus? If so it could be that the USB port does not provided enough power. You can try a powered USB hub. You can also get a USB pigtail that takes power from to USB ports to the single USB port on the drive like this one.

- Does it show in Disk Utility?

If it does what is format?

- Does it show in System Profiler under USB? You should see the chipset in the enclosure as well as the HD itself
