hi cann anyone tell me if I can sign into iCloud on my Apple TV 3. It allows me to add my password and asks which trusted device to send code to, but then says it cannot connect to server and I should try later. I have tried several times and always the same. It allowed me to sign into iTunes ok.

What is your end goal? What are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to homeshare? Are you trying to view photos? Are you trying to airplay?

ATV has trouble with the 2 step and 2 factor authentication methods now preferred by Apple. Try turning that off for your Apple ID. Obviously, this is an Apple problem, which Apple will need to fix, eventually.
Somehow you have 2 step or 2 factor authentication turned on in your Apple account. Turn it off since others have reported problems with it turned on when using the ATV.

MMany thanks for your suggestion I will try that. It worked ok for the iTunes bit though sent a code to my phone and let me input Just iCloud that won't work. I will let you know if this works

I wouldn't turn 2-factor back on until somebody gives the all-clear. Certainly, it'll need another tvOS update, maybe two, since 9.3 went to beta a while ago, likely before the complaints began.
Not sure what the issue is so not sure how it will work if turned back on. Others have reported they could leave it on and append the pin onto the password and it worked. This is explained in the links. Glad you at least got a work around for now.
