iPhone SE (Verizon vs sim free)

What is the difference between the Verizon and sim free versions of the iPhone SE? I plan on paying full price and probably activating on Verizon but may later take it somewhere else (like Ting). I've read and received conflicting information about whether the sim free phone has additional bands than the Verizon specific one. I know they have the same model number, but guy at the Apple Store said that the model number is just something internal and has nothing to do with the specs (like whether they are different). Are they the exact same phone or would the Verizon one have support for some band that would make it work better on the Verizon network and conversely would the sim free one have greater flexibility?
