Q: Mouse/trackpad issue

I updated my new macbook to newest el captain update (not sure of the exact name) and it all worked fine but recently my trackpad would just randomly stop moving or letting me click while I'm doing anything. The whole system would be stuck on whatever screen it was on. The only way to make it stop it to hold down the power button and its happened very often recently. anyone know what to do/is this common? I am really careful with my laptop so i know its nothing i did.
